Two meetings were held on 20
th March in Newcastle and 16
th April in London. The March meeting was attended by the team members with the objective to set the study area, discuss the methods for various problems (pluvial flooding, tributary fluvial flooding and breaching/over-topping fluvial flooding), and assign tasks.
The April meeting aimed to improve our understanding of flooding issues in the study area. Alex Nickson from GLA and Bill Donovan from the EA suggested that the climate change impact to the Thames and its tributaries might be the main object of study. The issues regarding to the flood propagation on the overland, the flooding near the critical infrastructures and the flood recovering are highlighted.
The study area includes five boroughs in the south east London: Bromley, Bexley, Croydon, Greenwich and Lewisham. The flooding in the area is mainly caused by tidal, fluvial, sewer (pluvial), surface water (overland flow) and ground water. The PPS25 (Planning Policy Statement 25 Development and Flood Risk), the Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) of Bexley, Croydon, Greenwich and Lewisham have been collected and are being studied for identifying the hotspots with high flood risk. Digital Terrain Model (in 10m resolution) and the Mastermap data for the study area have also been obtained. The usage of the Thames data for the ISIS model has been permitted by Dr. Jon Wicks from Halcrow.
Further activities are focussed on obtaining relevant data sets.
